For those that haven't heard, I have decided to participate in the 2015 RTW (that's ready to wear as in what you buy in the store) Fast that Sarah over at Goodbye Valentino is hosting. A full year of making all my clothes, though she does allow you to buy under things.
I have been trying to compile a list of things that I wear because I will obviously need more of those, as well as a list of items that are basic building blocks of a well balanced wardrobe, so that I have well fitting clothes for those times that jean and sweaters just won't work. Ideally, no matter what the day throws at me, I want to be able to go to my closet and find what I need instead of standing there pouting and sullen because I have nothing to wear.
This is what I have come up with for things that I wear pretty regularly:

Jeans, Sweaters, Camisoles, T-shirts (the whole reason I ever started sewing again), Leggings, Tunics, Layering Shirts, Cardigans, Panties, and Coats. These are the things that are already in my wardrobe and get a lot of rotation. Some of these items I already have good patterns for. Some of these, I just don't know.
Jeans for instance...Have you seen a jeans pattern out there that goes up to 64 inch hips? I would LOVE to try the high waist version of the Ginger Jeans that everyone is rocking, but I don't have the ambition to grade up quite that much. My go to RTW jeans are NYDJ. I may deconstruct a pair that are headed for the trash bin due to hrrrmmmm a wardrobe malfunction.
As for the Things I need in my Wardrobe:

I need some basic skirts in neutral colors; maybe a pencil skirt, a half circle midi, and is it wrong that I want a floor length tulle skirt with a satin tie waist? Some basic black pants, a nice blazer, a few button up shirts, maybe some basic shift dresses, and a classic black wrap dress also need to make their way in to my closet.
So, those are some of the things that I have plans for this year. Don't worry, it won't all be boring. There will still be plenty of pretties, just some basics to mix with the pretties!

Style Arc has 2 jeans patterns (3 if you count the one with exposed elastic instead of a waistband) that go up to a 61" hip. You'd still have to grade, but not so far as, say, the Ginger.

DeleteA floor length tulle skirt? Ahhhh! That's gonna be awesome!! :) It would certainly be nice if there were some cool jeans patterns that went into the real plus range. Deconstructing a fave pair sounds like a great option. I think there is a class on Craftsy that does that, but I don't think it would be that hard.... maybe, maybe not.... Can't wait to see all of your makes! I don't know about you, but I wish there was more time to sew!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I am thinking about making the tulle skirt instead of making a ball gown for an event later this year. I think I should be able to make the jeans pattern from the deconstructed jeans. The bigger issue is going to be finding good denim. I certainly do wish there was more time to sew, or at least someone to cut the patterns out for me. Cutting out patterns is my least favorite thing to do.

DeleteAn RTW fast sounds really great. There is too much fast fashion at the moment and, I don't know about in the US, but here in the UK much of it is badly made out of cheap materials. If it is okay quality then it is way over-priced. Good quality large sizes are like hen's teeth! Sounds like you will have a very classy wardrobe. I am going for a black wrap dress too. Looking forward to seeing your makes. Xx
ReplyDeleteI agree Mother of Reinvention! I think I am at a stage in life that I am past poorly made trendy clothes. If I want trends I will fit them in with my accessories. I like classic styles. Good quality plus size fashion is scarce here, too!

I am also finding the more I am sewing the less I am buying anyway because I think I am not spending that, when I can make it for considerably less and in better fabric. I seriously considered doing that this year but my son is getting married and I am not sure if I could manage. I really enjoy your blog and the clothes you create.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mandy C! I can understand with a big event like a wedding coming up not wanting to join in, but you certainly can still continue to make yourself wonderful clothes with great fabrics, but still allow yourself to buy things for those special events.
